Nigel Farage made a fake article 50 sign and held it up to the camera - big mistake

Despite helping to achieve Brexit and stepping down as leader of Ukip, Nigel Farage is still very much in the public eye when it comes to leaving the European Union.

The radio host today shared a picture of himself holding up a piece of paper purporting to quote Article 50.

Except, it doesn’t.

Farage tweeted:

Even Article 50 says we have NO obligation to pay anything to the EU after 2020.

His makeshift Article 50 states:

The rights and obligations deriving from the Treaties would therefore extinguish.

The actual end of that sentence, which is from a European Parliamentary Research Services briefing, states:

The rights and obligations deriving from the Treaties would therefore extinguish, at least to the extent agreed between the EU and the withdrawing state.

Article 50, however, - the actual Article 50 - states that “the Union shall negotiate and conclude an agreement with that State, setting out the arrangements for its withdrawal”.

Brilliantly - it looks like Farage has quietly deleted his tweet and replaced it with the correct version, referring to his paper sign as a 'briefing paper':
