Police forced to intervene as horde of hungry hipsters overrun Berlin vegan restaurant

Police were forced to break up crowds on the opening night of a vegan restaurant in Berlin after more than 300 people turned up.

In what has been described as a "frenzy" by local media, the night was less than an hour old when the Dandy Diner in the German capital's Neukölln district became overwhelmed with hungry hipsters.

Police intervened at around 9pm on Saturday night with the Local reporting that the situation was "spiralling worryingly out of control".

Photos on the diner's Facebook page showed hundreds of people queuing for the night of smoked tofu sandwiches, quinoa-beluga salad and beetroot tzatziki as well as rap music from Austrian artist Yung Hurn, before police cars turned up and asked the owners - two well-known fashion bloggers - to shut it down.

One of the owners, David Roth, told indy100:

Tons of people were coming. Our street - Karl-Marx-Straße - was packed with people. A scenery which looked like the World Cup final. Or Love Parade.

At 9pm the cops showed up. They told us that the situation wasn’t under control and they would storm the building if we wouldn’t tell everybody to go home. So - due to the pressure of the police - we closed down our opening after one hour.

There had been some accusations that Dandy Diner was part of the gentrification of the Neukölln district, but Roth disagreed:

Before we opened Dandy Diner there was a bank in our location. No poor old men who get kicked out. So, to use the term 'gentrification' in this context is pretty funny.
