This week's edition of Country Life has listed 39 requisite steps to becoming a gentleman - which include singing "lustily" in church and knowing how to undo a bra with one hand.

Paula Lester, features editor of Country Life, said:

Our magazine has been going for 120 years, so we've got a pretty good idea about what makes a gentleman.

It's almost the ones that you don't have to think about that are the most important: being kind and in control, having courtesy and charm, and being able to put people at their ease in any kind of social situation.

And you must never, ever wear sandals.
