North America is in the grips of a cold spell that's so extreme they've called it the "bomb cyclone".

People were prepared for the worst after weather forecasters warned of the severe pressure drop in the region and record-breaking low temperatures.

But for some, the icy snap resulted in something even more dramatic: temperatures were so low their windows cracked.

This is what happened to one person's window in Northern Ontario.

And Mitchell Tonks was in bed in Alberta, Canada, when he heard a crack.

Mr Tonks told indy100 that although he lives in the northern part of Canada where winters are very cold, it's unusual for windows to break. He said:

My sister's window broke as well.

Meanwhile, in Michigan, US, Sara's window cracked from top to bottom. She's now looking for a window glass repair service.

Mary Beth Trendos from Ontario in Canada told us it's "not a common thing at all. I've never known it to happen."

Here are some more cracked windows.
