Woman explains what the colours on food packaging actually mean in viral TikTok

A woman has gone viral on TikTok after explaining the reason for the multi-coloured circles on crisp packets and biscuit wrappers.

Sonya Gonzalezmier, who says she has a background in food marketing, made the video is response to a man who asked what the circles mean on his Takis crisp packet meant.

She begins to explain in the video: “I work in food marketing and we have these colour patches on all our packaging.”

Sonya then dismisses other theories on the coloured circles: ““No, they’re not barcodes; no, they’re not a mysterious sign.”

She goes on: “They are colour control patches, we need them because the colours that you see on the packaging are not actually the colours that we’re printing. Let me explain...

“To choose the colours that you see on the packaging, we actually layer colours and the colour patches are the colours we are layering on top of each other to achieve the colours you see.

“To make sure the colours are correct, we look at the colour control patches and if they’re slightly off, we know that the whole packaging will be off.”

So basically, they have no value or purpose for the consumer whatsoever, according to Sonya.

The video has had more than 26,000 views.

One person said: “That’s a great factoid.”

“Fun fact of the day! Loved it,” another person wrote.

Someone else replied: “Haha this took me back to my old job designing labels for supermarkets.”

“Ooh this is interesting!!” A fourth person responded.
