7 things you never realised weren't Scottish

7 things you never realised weren't Scottish

These things are almost synonymous with Scotland. But they aren't actually Scottish. Several examples from Terry Deary's Horrible Histories: Bloody Scotland.

1. Haggis

Haggis was popular in England until the end of the 1700s, but was made popular in Scotland by poet Robbie Burns's ode To a Haggis.

2. Bagpipes

These were invented in Persia long before they became popular in Scotland.

3. Golf

This became popular in Roman times.

4. Whiskey

The first written record of whiskey is from 1405 - and it comes from Ireland, not Scotland.

5. Tartan

While it is not known exactly where Tartan originated from, it is not actually Scottish: the Scottish Tartans Museum notes Tartan cloth has been found dating back to 3000 BC, but the earliest known tartan in Scotland dates from 300 or 400AD.

6. Scotch eggs

The name is a misnomer: these were invented by London based store Fortnum & Mason.

7. Groundskeeper Willie

Not really Scottish or a groundskeeper, but played by American actor Dan Castellaneta.
