According to new data from the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), Bashar al Assad’s government reportedly “dropped 12,958 barrel bombs on Syria in 2016”.

Of the victims, 166 were children.

According to UNHCR, there are 6.6 million internally displaced Syrian refugees, and many of those are women and children.

Seven-year old Bana Alabed is one such child, who gained an international following on Twitter last year, after her tweets about life in Aleppo, and later fleeing Syria, went viral.

Bana is from east Aleppo, an area that has undergone extensive bombing from government forces, and in July, the President’s forces cut off supply lines in the rebel-held neighbourhoods, forcing the 250,000 civilians to live under siege.

In early December, Bana and her mother Fatemah, who often tweeted on her behalf, disappeared from the internet, prompting people to ask about their safety.

She resumed her twitter activity a few days later, but the news hadn’t been good.

Bu now it looks like Bana is finally safe.

Alabed and her family were safely evacuated from Syria in December, and have since settled in Turkey.

The young girl met Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

And people have been sharing her recent tweet, which confirms her safety:
