Trump just said he's the reason more people say 'Merry Christmas'

We've all heard the old cliched and xenophobic claims that 'you can't even say Merry Christmas any more without being thrown in jail.'

Any level-headed person knows that is complete poppycock, but some folk do choose to believe that traditional greetings like that are being phased out in favour of political correctness.

One of those people, perhaps unsurprisingly, is former reality TV star and now-president Donald Trump, who addressed the use of the phrase in his speech during the National Day of Prayer event at the White House.

Trump declared that he would be signing a new executive order that would create a new faith-based initiative at the White House. Leaders from the Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Hindu faiths were all present.

After announcing the executive order, he went on to make the bold claim that "Merry Christmas" has surged back into popularity since his ascension to presidency - something that apparently wasn't happening under the leadership of Barack Obama.

One nation under God. So important. And we say it. A lot of people, you know, they don't say it. But you know what?

They're starting to say it more, just like we’re starting to say 'Merry Christmas' when that day comes around.

You notice a big difference between now and two or three years ago? It was going in the other direction rapidly. Now it’s straight up.

This isn't the first time that Trump has said that "Merry Christmas" has made a revival thanks to him.

On Christmas Day last year, he tweeted about how proud he was to "led the charge against the assault of our cherished and beautiful phrase".

Now, we're not sure where this assault began or ended, but we've seen little evidence that "Merry Christmas" was in danger of going extinct. Either way, it's back thanks to Trump, so let's be grateful that a holiday that only a small percentage of the world celebrates with such a phrase is back from the dead and ready to avenge itself.

It should be noted that Trump's announcement came just hours after he admitted to reimbursing his personal lawyer to Stormy Daniels with hush money to keep the porn actress quiet about the reported affair the two had.

Trump was asked during his speech about the alleged $130,000 payment but he refused to comment.
