The Beatles’ eighth studio album Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band turns 50 this year.

So we thought now would be a perfect opportunity to revisit one of the weirdest and most unbelievable conspiracy theories that have dogged the brilliant band all these years.

You see, a number of websites (and presumably a fair number of fans) claim that the original Paul ‘Macca’ McCartney died in a car crash in 1966.

The songwriter we’ve been hearing from since that point, is his double.

The source?

A so-called ‘exclusive interview’ Ringo Starr gave to a satirical news website. Seriously.

Although he is very much alive, here are some of the reasons the conspiracy theory has continued stubbornly on all these years:

1. McCartney didn’t have his shoes in that photograph

Obviously proof that he was replaced with a double who had an aversion to shoes.

2. Sgt Pepper's wreath album cover

There is a yellow wreath at the bottom shaped like a bass guitar. People thought that was proof that he had died, and The Beatles were candidly mourning.

3. Strawberry Fields Forever

This one is self-explanatory - the line "I buried Paul".

4. 28IF

The registration plate on the Volkswagen Beatle in the Abbey Road cover is “LMW 28IF” and some people think the ‘28’ is a reference to how old McCartney would have been at the time Abbey Road was released.

Yes, it is a stretch.

5. If you play I’m So Tired backwards, John can allegedly be heard singing ‘Paul is dead, I miss him I miss him’.

We told you it was bizarre.
