Stephen Colbert dissects Trump's awkward appearance at George H W Bush's funeral

Donald Trump's appearance at George H.W. Bush's funeral ruffled a few feathers in the US, given that he would be surrounded by the Bushs, Obamas and Clintons, families that he isn't a big fan of.

Not only were there awkward greetings but the speakers at the funeral also managed to subtly mock Trump in their tributes to the Bush.

Trump could have easily ignored these subtle criticisms but even he couldn't be on his best behaviour as he failed to read the apostles creed and even made a big show of things the day before when meeting with the Bush family.

Stephen Colbert isn't one to mince his words when criticising Trump but he managed to perfectly sum up the president's appearance at the funeral in the opening monologue of the most recent edition of The Late Show.

When speaking about Trump's interactions with the former presidents and first ladies he said:

It was quite a moving sight to see the presidents and the first ladies in the front row, waiting to honour President Bush, chatting comfortably with one another.

Until Trump showed up, and then it became silent-staring time. Donald Trump is the only person in the world who can bring down a funeral.

On Trump's pitiful attempts to read the apostles creed:

Oh, I’m sorry, I, uh, I zoned out there for a minute.

I was thinking about all the evangelicals who voted for me.

What are we doing, the Macarena? I’m in.

Colbert also highlighted that the Bush family would have told Trump that by attending the funeral he would avoid any criticism:

Of course, earlier this year President Trump was famously not invited to former first lady Barbara Bush’s funeral.

But he was welcomed today after the ‘Bush family promised Trump that’ the ‘funeral would avoid criticising him.’

They even assured him that the choir would drown out the sound of other ex-presidents rolling in their graves!
