Elon Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, tweeted the following on 12 December 2017.

Which was a little confusing to some.

There were a few theories as to the significance of the number:

These are all incorrect. For a clue, you'll have to go to Musk's new twitter bio.

You read correctly. "Hat Salesman".

Musk has been selling hats to promote and help fund one of his new endeavours. The number relates to how many he has sold.

The Boring Company is Musk's latest project, which hopes to alleviate traffic by tunnelling ('boring', geddit?!).

The site's description reads:

To solve the problem of soul-destroying traffic, roads must go 3D, which means either flying cars or tunnels.

Unlike flying cars, tunnels are weatherproof, out of sight and won't fall on your head. A large network of tunnels many levels deep would fix congestion in any city, no matter how large it grew (just keep adding levels).

The key to making this work is increasing tunnelling speed and dropping costs by a factor of 10 or more – this is the goal of The Boring Company.

Fast to dig, low cost tunnels would also make Hyperloop adoption viable and enable rapid transit across densely populated regions, enabling travel from New York to Washington DC in less than 30 minutes.

He tweeted about his tunnel boring machine's first exploits in June:

He's also so far sold 35,000 caps at the very least. At $20 each, that means Musk has sold $700,000 worth of hat.

Give him credit, he's a very competent hat salesman.
