Piers Morgan takes another swipe at Meghan Markle after boosting Ofcom complaints to ‘unprecedented’ numbers

Piers Morgan doesn’t seem too fussed about the record number of Ofcom complaints he prompted during his tenure as co-host of Good Morning Britain.

The 56-year-old broadcaster quit the ITV daytime show in March after storming out of the studio while on air due to a row with weather presenter Alex Beresford.

Ofcom received 54,453 complaints after Morgan implied live on air that he didn’t believe Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, when she revealed during her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey that she felt suicidal.

The number of complaints surpassed the record previously set by Diversity’s Bafta-winning Black Lives Matter performance on Britain’s Got Talent, which received 25,017 complaints.

As well as taking the top spot for the most Ofcom complaints, Morgan’s interviews with social care minister Helen Whately and Home Office minister Victoria Atkins also made the top ten, accounting for three different complaints.

Sharing a link to a BBC story about the list, Morgan made a point of noting that none of the government-related complaints were upheld.

In the tweet to his 7.9m followers, Morgan slammed the article for not mentioning this fact and went on to ask: “How can @Ofcom possibly conclude I must believe a proven liar...?”

Along with his tweet, Morgan took the opportunity to take another swipe at Meghan, calling her “Princess Pinocchio” and saying that he believes that none of the complaints relating to her will be upheld either.

In the report, Ofcom said: “In many of the cases above, we did not find the issues warranted an investigation.”

An Ofcom spokesperson said: “We’re a nation of TV lovers, and it’s kept us entertained and informed like never before during lockdown,” its spokesperson said. “From time to time viewers see things that trouble them, and that’s where we come in.”

“We assess every complaint we receive, and while we don’t step in lightly given the importance of free speech we take strong action where we find serious harm to audiences.”
