Twenty-nine-year-old ski instructor Natty Hagood had been snow boarding with a friend, and a woman he was showing around, on the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort where he works.

After having made five turns on a black diamond slope called Thunder (one of the hardest types), he attempted to shoot through a gap between two trees.

Hagood hurtled towards the branches, and pulled to a stop when his mouth felt strange.

Thought maybe my chinstrap got pushed up into my face, so I tried to brush it off and that’s when I felt the stick. So, I shook left to right and saw the stick moving in my peripherals. I reached out and grabbed it and wiggled it before realising it was pretty far in there.

Turns out he'd managed to impale his lip on an 18-inch branch.

Gnarly.

Instead of panicking, Hagood called over to his friend, saying he got a “new piercing”.

He experienced no pain initially but after the branch - which went clean through his bottom lip - was braced, he went to the hospital where the pain came in earnest.

A doctor gave him a numbing injection and then the top left section of his lip, by the exit wound was cut and the branch pulled through.

It was all well and good until he received a hospital bill which came to almost $1,500 (£1,234).

He set up a GoFundMePage, that raised over $2,000 (£1,646).

Community spirit, indeed.
