We all know the drill – a quick check in the mirror for rogue toothpaste, and a spritz of perfume on the neck and wrists before you head out to take on the world. But you’ve actually been getting your last-minute, out-the-door routine wrong all these years.

We’re taught that we should put perfume in these places because this is where our pulse points are, ie, where veins are close to the skin and you can feel your pulse.

The common assumption is it's these places that can amplify your flashy scent.

But there are other areas you’re missing, including your belly button.

The belly button is a great place for perfume, according to experts, because your body heat allows the scent to radiate.

Even actress Liv Tyler as an advocate of perfumed belly buttons. She told Into The Gloss:

I put little drops on my fingers and put some under my arms and in my belly button. My dad taught me that—if you put it where you heat up, the smell stays with you.

But you’re also missing the insides of your elbows and the backs of your knees, which also generate a lot of heat throughout the day.

Experts have also recommended spraying your perfume down your back, because your movements will diffuse the scent subtly.

And you thought choosing a perfume was the complicated part.
