Disney provided a first look at the live action version of Aladdin, in which actor Will Smith has nabbed the role of Genie.
The story of the Disney street urchin who befriends a genie and falls in love with a princess is getting a reboot.
Directed by Guy Ritchie – who’s known for films filled with explosions and awe-inspiring action sequences – the film is looking to be a tribute to the original.
Entertainment Weekly provided a first look at the film, and released stills in their magazine.
Naomi Scott took on the role of Jasmine (instead of, you know, a Middle Eastern actress), prompting criticism online.
Will Smith, with his hands spread out and adorned with jewellery and a topknot takes centre stage.
People have thoughts about him, too.
One of the biggest pet peeves about the feature, fans said, was that Will Smith's genie...wasn't blue.
He later revealed that the magazine cover depicted the genie in his human form, and that he will actually be blue for most of the film.
There, uh, were a lot of memes.
And the villainous Jafar (played by Dutch-Tunisian Marwan Kenzari) people noted, is a thirst trap.
So that's that.
