Green New Deal: Ocasio-Cortez shares inspiring video on how US can tackle climate change

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has shared a video showing a hopeful vision for how America can tackle climate change.

The short film is based on the Democratic congresswoman’s Green New Deal, an ambitious plan to restructure the US economy to provide new jobs while protecting the environment.

In the video, AOC sends a message “from ten years in the future”, imagining a history of the 2020s in which America takes climate change seriously and turns the country around.

AOC’s vision starts by explaining how top scientists warned of the effects of climate change in the 1970s and how many ignored those warnings while fossil fuel corporations got richer during the decades that followed.

It then goes on to imagine how climate change policies could change America for good.

The Green New Deal is still short on specific policies for how a climate-friendly economy could be achieved – something that appears to be deliberate to allow for flexibility.

However, that hasn’t stopped it generating enthusiasm with left-wing Democrats and climate-change campaigners.

Of course, there were also people who criticised the video – although their criticism generally focused on personal attacks on AOC rather than serious reasons why we shouldn’t do something about climate change.

Many Democratic presidential candidates have already backed the Green New Deal, such as Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, and Elizabeth Warren.
