Donald Trump has sent the US special presidential envoy for hostage affairs to Sweden for A$AP Rocky‘s trial and it’s caused a bit of a furore online.

The Harlem rapper, who's real name is Rakim Mayers, is accused of beating a 19-year-old man in Stockholm on 30 June.

Mayers is accused of assault, alongside two others and the street-fight has become a point of contention in US-Swedish diplomacy.

On Tuesday the 30-year-old pleaded not guilty to the charge as his trial opened. He claimed to have acted in self-defence.

Robert O’Brien is the special envoy who was sent to monitor the court proceedings, and people are a bit confused.

Why did Trump send the country's top negotiator?

Others tried to make light of the bizarre state of affairs

And think there are probably more pressing matters the US president ought to involve himself in

However, others are glad the US president has stepped in

Some are even impressed - even at the cost of a potential international incident it may cause

Renee Black, the mother of the 30-year-old rapper is “grateful” to Trump for his help.

“I'm grateful, very grateful, that the president even considered approaching it in the manner that he did,” Renee Black told CNN Swedish affiliate Expressen TV.
