For many pet owners, the comfort of having a dog or a cat around the house is one of life's simple pleasures.
Beyond feeding them, playing with them, and the odd trip to the vet the only thing you need to do is take the dog out for a walk or let the cat out to go about its own business.
Hikers Cynthia Bennett and her boyfriend decided to take a different approach to sharing their lives with their pets.
Rather than keep them cooped up indoors or at a friend's house, they decided to take the pair on their trips around the state of Colorado.
Fortunately for everyone online, they documented the experience in a series of stunning photographs.
The two animals are Henry the dog and Baloo the cat.
Cynthia and her partner have been with Henry since 2014 when they adopted him at just 14 weeks old.
Speaking to The DodoCynthia detailed her first interaction with the pooch.
We looked around and Henry was just sitting there.
They said he was only 3 and a half months, but he was like five times bigger than the other 3 and a half-month old puppies.
And he had these long legs, and the body type of a wolf or husky.
He just curled up into my lap and went belly up and flipped his head over my arm.
And from then, I decided that he was coming home with us.
Because they're avid hikers, the couple were keen to see if Henry could handle the outdoor terrain of the Colorado wilderness. They were delighted to discover he was a natural.
A few months ago they decided to add another member to the family which is how Baloo arrived.
I really wanted a rescue kitten.
I’d looked for five months, and I saw lots of different kittens, but none of them really had the right personality or fit.
I knew that I wanted to take him anywhere — camping, hiking.
Although it was love at first sight between Cynthia and Baloo it's clear from the photos that the connection between the feline and Henry is much deeper.
Cats and dogs aren't usually the best of bed fellows but this friendship is something truly specia; according to Cynthia it's like they're related.
Henry has become the best big brother and always checks on him to make sure he is doing okay.
He couldn't be fitting into our little family any better and we just love him to the moon and back.Â
