Donald Trump's campaign was characterised by overt racism, but he particularly targeted those of Latino or Hispanic origin. So why did Hispanics vote for him?

He threatened to deport millions of Mexicans in his first hour in office. He claimed that those crossing the border were bringing drugs and crime. He accused Latinos of being killers and rapists. He attacked Jeb Bush for his Mexican-born wife.

A pair of Trump supporters, who attacked and urinated on a Hispanic homeless man in Boston, told police that they targeted him because "Donald Trump was right, all these illegals need to be deported". Trump responded with: "I will say that people who are following me are very passionate."

Most famously, he promised to build a wall along the US border with Mexico to keep immigrants out - and demanded that Mexico pay for it.

Let's not forget that he did all this in the full knowledge that undocumented Latino immigrant labour was responsible for helping to build Trump Towers.

Trump is literally built on the back of Latino exploitation and anti-Hispanic racism.

But the latest exit polls are showing some shocking unexpected votes for Donald Trump - nearly 30 per cent of Hispanic/Latino people actually voted for him.

Here's a chart showing the breakdown in votes by race:

So far, the data suggests that 29 per cent of Hispanic Americans voted for Donald Trump. That's a decisive proportion.

According to thisHuffPost/YouGov poll from June last year, only 18 per cent of Hispanic people saw him as a serious presidential candidate.

Cuban American communities, whose memories of socialist Castro Cuba and the Bay of Pigs combine with religious zeal and opposition to lifting the embargo, traditionally vote Republican.

Otherwise, Hispanic Americans tend on the most part to vote Democrat. Many leading figures in the Latino community came out in scathing opposition to Trump, urging Hispanic voters, in particular Cubans, to vote Democrat.
