Donald Trump has said that he will remind Pope Francis that Isis want to invade the Vatican if the pontiff dares to criticise capitalism in front of him.
Just when you thought the presidential hopeful couldn't possibly dig a bigger hole for himself, in a CNN interview on Wednesday presenter Chris Cuomo asked the billionaire what he would talk to Pope Francis about if given the chance during his visit to the US next month.
The property tycoon said that he thought the Pope was a "good guy" even if he's becoming very "political".
But if the Pope said anything negative about capitalism such as its ability to become an "avenue to greed" that is "toxic and corrupt", Trump said he would give his holiness short shrift:
I'd say "Isis wants to get you". You know that Isis wants to go in and take over the Vatican, you have heard that, that's a dream of theirs.
After looking temporarily baffled, Cuomo asked the follow up question: "You would scare the Pope?".
I am going to have to scare the Pope. The Pope I hope can only be scared by God. But the truth is - you know, if you look at what's going on - you better hope that capitalism works, because it's the only thing we have right now. And it's a great thing when it works properly.
The candidate everyone loves to hate went on to say "I don’t think the Pope is opposed to capitalism, by the way” - despite Francis's repeated criticisms of capitalist and corporate cultures.
Sadly, we probably haven't reached peak Trump yet, but you can watch the Trump interview to end all Trump interviews so far below:
