Ellen DeGeneres has not had a good year, and it doesn't seem like it's getting any better.

On Friday, the comedian posted a short clip of herself in her Halloween costume, which was a sort of hybrid between a war-time nurse and a superhero.

Her tweet said she was inspired by the "real superheroes of 2020", which one would assume was a tribute to the ongoing work and sacrifice of healthcare professionals during a global pandemic.

However, her attempt at a culturally conscious costume didn't exactly go the way she might have expected.

While some people, including nurses, enjoyed the shoutout, others quickly referenced the allegations which surfaced earlier this year, when numerous former employees spoke out about "racism, fear and intimidation" during their time working on the show, leading to an internal investigation by WarnerMedia.

Some people saw it as a transparent attempt to claw back her former beloved reputation.

The backlash comes after Khloe Kardashian appeared on a guest on the show defending her sister Kim following controversial private island birthday party.

DeGeneres was criticised for giving Kardashian a platform to defend her sister's actions.
