The National Union of Students published some particularly devastating polling today, as the Liberal Democrat conference goes on.

The NUS said its research was especially relevant as 197 seats at the next election will only require a swing of five per cent or less to change hands.

Meanwhile, a poll of polls for the i paper found almost one in ten Lib Dem supporters were defecting to... Ukip.

The overall picture for the Lib Dems doesn't look a whole lot better either. In the last general election, Nick Clegg's party received 23 per cent of the vote.
