Gay Star News (GSN), an LGBT news website, just shared the following image – which has since been deleted – to its 112k Twitter followers.
Hey @gaystarnews screen grabs exist so you don't get let off the hook for this racist shit https://t.co/vK1zVANm5v— Estelle Hart (@Estelle Hart) 1490881875
The image features a number of celebrities in their youth - you have Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and even Disney actor Demi Lovato.
And then you have a caption reading ‘Nicki Minaj’. And an image of a baby monkey.
Despite the fact that the Tweet was removed, people noticed. A lot of people.
What the fuck @gaystarnews https://t.co/PjMuOnJ9gE— Eliel Cruz (@Eliel Cruz) 1490884697
@J_Manasa @gaystarnews Oh my god, that's horrendous. What a bunch of idiots.— Josh Spero (@Josh Spero) 1490884767
GSN responded to the accusations of racism via a followup tweet:
We apologize an offensive meme was posted on our Twitter feed. We didn't look closely at all the images in it and it won't happen again.— GSN (@GSN) 1490882976
UM.
We didn't look closely at all the images.
So it's difficult to tell the difference between a baby chimpanzee, and a baby Nicki Minaj? Really?
The Editor-in-Chief of GSN told indy100:
This is something we shared and totally failed to look at properly. It is totally vile. The person who made the mistake is mortified as am I. It was up for just a few minutes and then deleted as soon as he saw. We instantly and unreservedly apologised on Twitter and I would like to repeat that we are desperately sorry. This was purely because we didn't spot it. This has never happened before and will not happen again. We will not only say sorry but will work to make amends. We are strongly anti-racism and this really matters to us.
