A conservative pundit has weighed into the abortion debate this week after she used an image of a six-week-old fetus to argue in favour of abortion laws.

Liz Wheeler, 30, was responding to a tweet from freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, in which she pointed out that many women wouldn't realise they're six weeks pregnant, as it would mean being only two weeks late on your period.

Ocasio-Cortex was responding to the newly introduced abortion ban in Georgia, after Governor Kemp signed into law the state's 'fetal heartbeat bill', which states that all abortions after six weeks are illegal.

In the tweet, Ocasio-Cortez wrote:

“6 weeks pregnant” = 2 weeks late on your period.

Most of the men writing these bills don’t know the first thing about a woman’s body outside of the things they want from it.

It’s relatively common for a woman to have a late period + not be pregnant.

Her statement, however, did not sit well with fellow Twitter users, who quickly ripped the comment to shreds.

Emily Milakovic, a recent graduate from Washington State University, shared a series of eloquent tweets about fetal development, pointing out all of the facts that Liz conveniently missed in her original post.

In a tweet, she wrote:

It does not, however, have a brain. It has not developed a cerebral cortex & therefore is still ~8 weeks from even being able to breathe or swallow. It is at least 6 weeks away from the development of the frontal or temporal lobes of the brain.

She then continued:
