Labour MP takes a swipe at the Queen as he gets sworn into parliament

While being sworn into parliament, a newly-elected Labour MP decided to take a swipe at the monarchy.

Before making a non-religious "solemn affirmation" of allegiance to the Queen, Richard Burgon, the MP for East Leeds, broke protocol to express his belief that the head of state should be elected.

As someone that believes that the head of state should be elected, I make this oath in order to serve my constituents.

I do solemnly, sincerely and truly declare and affirm that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, her heirs and successors according to law.
