A school in America has been forced to apologise after it emerged that at least a dozen staff dressed up as a ‘border wall’ and in stereotypical Mexican clothes at work for Halloween.

The photos of Heights Elementary School employees were posted on Facebook.

The staff cut out and painted cardboard in a brick pattern and printed MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN on it in blue, red and white.

Other teachers dressed up in sombreros, serapes, wore fake moustaches and carried maracas in stereotypical depictions of Mexicans. In another picture, a woman seems to have written ‘Mexican’ on her sombrero, NBC News reports.

The photos ignited anger online, with parents screen-grabbing the photos and posting it on their own Facebook pages.

Facebook user Page Shen wrote:

They call themselves teachers? I thought teachers were role models who serve to broaden their students’ minds through knowledge. This is plain ignorance and shameful.

“ Disgusting. Absolutely sickening,” another added.

Photos were posted on the Middleton School District’s official Facebook page but have since been deleted.

Josh Middleton, the district’s superintendent apologised in a video posted on the Facebook page, which has since been removed.

I am here really to share that last night, a parent contacted me expressing concern over staff costumes that were worn on Halloween during the school day.

Have seen those photos and am deeply troubled by the decision by our staff members to wear those costumes that are clearly insensitive and inappropriate.

["I want to express my] sincerest and deepest apologies," he added, and said the district was "looking into the matter."

I want to say we are better than this. We embrace all students. We have a responsibility to teach and reach all students period.

Thousands of people commented on Middleton’s video, and though it is unclear if the staff will be disciplined, a petition called No Racism in Middleton School District demanding such situations be prevented from happening again gained over 4,200 signatures.
