Missouri police raid terminal cancer patient's room for marijuana in shocking video

A stage 4 pancreatic cancer patient says he feels his rights have been violated after a group of police officers raided his hospital room looking for marijuana in a now-viral video that's been watched more than 600,000 times.

In the clip, which was streamed on Facebook Live on Thursday, two police officers from the City of Bolivar Police Department search through property belonging to the terminally ill Nolan Sousley, who was hospitalised with pancreatic cancer at the Citizens Memorial Hospital in Missouri. He was hospitalised on Tuesday after he complained of suffering from night sweats and fevers.

Speaking to the local press, Sousley said that the raid happened after a security guard entered his room, saying that he could smell marijuana.

At the beginning of the video, Sousley can be heard saying:

This is what happens when you have stage 4 pancreatic cancer.

I had some capsules that had some THC oil in them. I took them outside in the parking lot.

As they search his possessions, an officer says:

If we find marijuana we’ll give you a citation.

We’re not taking you down to the county jail. We haven’t found marijuana.

The officers also claim that they've been tipped off that there is a marijuana smell coming from Sousley’s room.

Sousley then goes on to remind the officers that medical marijuana will soon be legal in Missouri. However, the officer responds:

It’s still illegal.

But Sousley then continues:

But I don’t have time to wait for that.

Man, what would you do? Tell me what you’d do.

Though voters approved the legalisation of medical marijuana in the state of Missouri in November 2018, possession is still currently illegal.

The officers then attempted to search another one of his bags, but he refuses, saying it's his 'last hour' bag.

According to Time magazine, Bolivar police chief Mark Webb said the officers received consent before raiding the room, and that they didn't find anything illegal in their search. Webb also commented that there were no plans to investigate the incident further.

Speaking to the Springfield News-Leader, Citizens Memorial Healthcare commented:

It is against the hospital’s policy to smoke or vape on the hospital’s campus.

It is also our policy to call appropriate law enforcement any time hospital personnel see or reasonably suspect illegal drug use in patient rooms or otherwise on campus.
