In the last few hours Owen Smith’s name has swept across social media.

No, it doesn’t have anything to do with his pledge to scrap tuition fees or the dramatic welfare reforms he wants to roll out if he wins the leadership race.

It has to do with a Labour event in Hull on Sunday, where claims were made on Twitter that the Pontypridd MP made an inappropriate joke.

Twitter user Charlotte had noticed a friend's Facebook post about the alleged comment, and quickly tweeted about it, causing a firestorm...

A spokesperson for Owen Smith told indy100:

During an event in Hull yesterday, Owen was asked by a member of the audience 'can I ask you a personal question?' Owen said: '5 foot 6 inches, and 29 inch inside leg'. He then gestured to the inside of his leg.

It was a self-deprecating joke about his height.

Well, there you have it.

This isn't the first time Owen Smith's jokes have come up short.
