The text message is 25 years old - here are some of the most famous ever sent

It's almost inconceivable nowadays, but text messages were once exactly that and only that.

No emoji or gifs or boomerang.

Although they are very elaborate now, they had very humble beginnings.

The first message was sent by software programmer Neil Papworth in 1992 and its message was appropriate for the season.

The celebrate the SMS reaching a quarter of a century here is a list of some of the most important (and a few of the funniest) texts ever sent.

This mass text was sent during Obama's 2008 Presidential campaign to the thousands of his supporters.

It reached a network so large that many of the recipients didn't receive it until the news had already been broken.

In 2008 a digital radio signal was sent from the RT-70 radar telescope in Ukraine reading:

Hello from Earth.

It was sent to the planet Gliese 581c but won't reach there until 2029.

“Tell the police to hurry. People are dying here!”

Julie Bremnes sent this message as the mass murder Anders Breivik began firing on Norway's Utoya Island in 2011.

The 16-year-old managed to maintain the conversation with her mother during the massacre and eventually survived while he text is seen as one of the defining documents of the event.

"The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality, they seldom attack a human."

This could easily be a line from the 1970s horror movie Piranha but it is actually the world record for fastest text ever sent via a touch screen phone.

The record was set by Brazilian teenager Marcel Fernandes Filho in 2014 who achieved the feat in a staggering 17 seconds.
