Tommy Robinson is begging Trump for refugee status and everyone is making the same point

Tommy Robinson has launched a public appeal for Donald Trump to grant him asylum in the United States as he faces being jailed in the United Kingdom and, of course, everyone is making exactly the same point.

The EDL founder and anti-Islam activist, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was found to have committed contempt of court last week, after he filmed defendants on trial and broadcast it on social media in breach of a reporting ban.

In a desperate plea shared onto his InfoWars conspiracy theory channel, he broadcast a message to the US president. In the video, he can be heard saying:

I feel like I’m two days away from being sentenced to death in the UK.

I beg Donald Trump, I beg the American government, to look at my case.

I need evacuation from this country because dark forces are at work.

In the video, Robinson claimed he'd be killed if he was jailed and that British prisons are "controlled by jihadi gangs". In his message, intended for Donald Trump, he added:

This is a direct appeal on behalf of my family – we love the United States, I have no future here [in the UK].

Journalist James Fleton shared the footage to Twitter, accompanied by the caption:

So to clarify, Mr Robinson, you’d like to become an asylum seeker because you don’t like English laws for English people??

It goes without saying that many other social media users picked up on Robinson's hypocrisy, too.

The right-wing pundit has enjoyed mounting support in America, with Trump Jr tweeting his support, and the president's ambassador for international religious freedom raising his imprisonment with the British government last year, reports the Independent.

Robinson, who has previously suggested that he would appeal the ruling, will be sentenced at the Old Bailey on Thursday morning, reports the Independent.

In the words of Alanis Morissette, isn't it ironic, don't you think?
