President Trump never misses an opportunity to exploit his opponents’ weaknesses. Love him or loathe him, he’s got a knack for going very low in the most awful but effective ways.
The latest example of this has happened just one day after Joe Biden was forced to apologise for suggesting that black people who don’t want to vote for him over president Trump in November “ain’t black”.
Merch has appeared on Trump’s official campaign website, including a t-shirt with the words “you ain’t black” written on it, with Joe Biden’s name beneath the quote. The t-shirt is modelled by a black woman.
It’s quite impressive that Trump seems to be branching out into the world of fast fashion. One day is eerily quick to already have these t-shirts on sale.
So what happened?
Biden made the comments during an appearance on The Breakfast Club, a cult radio show that commands an audience of about 3 million people a month who tune in to hear host 'Charlamagne tha God' discuss hip hop culture, politics and social issues.
Charlamagne quizzed Biden on topics such as the disproportionate number of black people jailed for minor marijuana usage, the higher death rate of black and Latinx people from Covid-19 and rumours of Biden running alongside a black woman as his VP pick.
When the latter subject came up, Biden said there were “multiple black women” being considered before a member of Biden’s team could be heard telling Charlamagne that they were out of time.
When the host said he wants Biden to return to the show, Biden said:
Well I’ll tell you, if you’ve got a problem figuring out if you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.
Charlamagne quickly set him straight, saying:
It don’t have nothing to do with Trump, it has to do with the fact I want something for my community.
Obviously, an old white guy telling a black man he “ain’t black” caused outrage.
Lots of people online accused Biden of being racist.
Trump promptly released a video featuring the remark and branding Biden “racist”, so it wasn't just a moral error but a political one too.
Biden has apologised, saying:
I should not have been so cavalier.
I've never, never, ever taken the African American community for granted.
I shouldn't have been such a wise guy.
No-one should have to vote for any party based on their race, their religion, their background.
Supporters of Biden will be definitely hoping that he doesn't hand Trump any more political gifts like this one.
Because we're not sure we can take any more MAGA merch.
