Trump administration reportedly told senators: 'Vote against the president, and your head will be on a pike'

In an astounding revelation, CBS News has reported that Republican senators received a threat from the Administration saying that anyone who votes against the president in the impeachment trial will find their "head on a pike".

It's an absurd thing to say for obvious reasons, but also because it's utterly unnecessary: in order to be found guilty, the senate would need to vote against the president by a two-thirds majority, meaning 67 votes to convict. Only 45 or the 100 senators are Democrats, and no Republicans – even the most moderate – have suggested they will vote against Trump. The chances of him being found guilty are vanishingly small.

People have pointed out that such a threat could be in itself an impeachable offence.

While others have suggested flipping the threat on its head:

And the irony escaped no one.
