Donald Trump Jr has attempted to defend Senator Ted Cruz for taking a controversial trip to Cancun, Mexico amid a crisis in Texas but managed to make a major error when criticising the state’s ‘Democrat’ governor.
The oldest of the Trump children shared a link to a video that he had shared about the criticism for Cruz on Thursday afternoon but in the tweet, he lashed out at the critics saying, “The hypocrisy of those trying to cancel Ted Cruz who have been totally silent on their Democrat Governor’s incompetence is telling.”
He added that he thought the situation with Cruz was ‘fauxoutrage’ [sic] and even suggested that the controversy was fake.

There are a few problems here. Firstly the controversy definitely wasn’t fake as Cruz did go on holiday to Mexico with his family while millions in Texas have been left without electricity or water due to an unprecedented winter storm. Secondly and this is the big one, Texas’ governor is not a Democrat. It’s currently the Republican Greg Abbott, who has been in the role since 2015.
In fact, the last time Texas had a Democrat governor was Ann Richards who held the role between 1991 and 1995. Either Trump Jr was deliberately getting his facts wrong to annoy people on social media or he seriously needs to brush up on his knowledge of current governors around the United States.
If he was deliberately attempting to rile people up, he achieved his goal as many, many Twitter users were happy to inform him that Abbott is the current governor and is a Republican.

Our favourite response is possibly this from the Libertarian Party of Texas.
Yeah, we have been really quiet about our Democrat Governor's incompetence! We'll get right on that... https://t.co/OHu1rVUhd3— Libertarian Party of Texas (@Libertarian Party of Texas) 1613707342
To make his comment even more baffling, Greg Abbott has been in the news recently after bizarrely suggesting that the current problems in Texas due to the Democrats ‘Green New Deal’ policy which is using up too much energy and causing the power generators to fail.
In the video that Trump Jr shared on the Cruz story he admitted that the optics weren’t good for the Senator but he was refusing to cancel him.
