The white woman who was fired for blocking a black man from entering his own apartment is married to a man of colour - and he's speaking out

Remember that white woman who recently lost her job after blocking a black man from entering his apartment building?

Well, in a turn of events that few people could have predicted, it turns out she’s actually married to a man of colour – and he’s not holding back from speaking out about the incident.

In a Facebook video, Brandon Mueller distanced himself from his estranged wife, Hilary Thorton. Following the incident going viral, she has been nicknamed “Apartment Patty” and “Key Fob Kelly” after blocking 24 year-old D’Arreion Tole from entering without showing proof of residency.

The post reads:

Hello, my name is Brandon Mueller. I wanted to take a moment to express my deep disappointment in the incident that took place at Mr. Toles’ home. The individual in the video and I have been separated for over a year, and I, myself, no longer reside at the Elder Shirt Lofts building.

Mueller said he’s spent a large portion of his life educating others about the importance of diversity and hopes his wife’s mistakes can serve as a lesson to others.

My only hope is that we, as a community, can use this as an opportunity to do what my father taught me many years ago: to not allow others’ ignorance to incite anger and hatred, but to use it as an opportunity to learn, grow and promote love.

After the video of him being refused entry went viral, Told said he was “shocked this is America in 2018”.

Thorton lost her job for racial profiling just three days after the incident. Her employer released the following statement:

The Tribeca-STL family is a minority-owned company that consists of employees and residents from many racial backgrounds. We are proud of this fact and do not and never will stand for racism or racial profiling at our company.
