With the November midterm elections just a few months away, US president Donald Trump has claimed Democrats are going to impeach him for the third time, and unsurprisingly, his critics have delighted at that prospect.
Speaking in South Carolina on Friday, at a rally in support of Republican senator Darline Graham (the sister of the late Lindsey Graham, who was appointed to his seat following his passing, and is now facing representative Ralph Norman in a runoff), the convicted felon said: “I’m going to be impeached.”
He continued: “They’re going to impeach me - I have no idea why. I saw today, a congressman said on one of the shows, ‘we’re going to impeach President Trump, we’re going to impeach him’.”
It’s not clear to which congressman Trump is referring, but he went on to add that the politician was asked why and he replied “I don’t know”.
Articles of impeachment were brought against the Republican in April by Democratic representative John Larson of Connecticut, who said in a statement that Trump has “blown past every requirement to be removed from office” and that “it’s getting worse”.
Any attempts to impeach Trump at this point in time are unlikely to succeed due to the Republicans controlling both houses of Congress, but multiple polls point towards a margin in favour of the Democrats for the November midterms, which could see the Dems take control and make an impeachment (and then conviction) more likely.
With Trump warning of another attempt to impeach him, X/Twitter users have expressed their excitement and determination around that becoming a reality:
“And that’s just the start,” wrote political commentator Mayra, known online as LePapillonBlu2:
“Yassssss manifest that s***,” one account tweeted:
Another shared a meme of Jack Nicholson smiling and nodding excitedly:
And a third wrote: “Ideally… yeah”:
Of course, Trump has been impeached before, and made history as the first president in US history to be impeached twice – both in his first term.
The first impeachment pertained to a conversation Trump had with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, and the second concerned the infamous insurrection on January 6, 2021.
In both instances, Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives, but not convicted in the Senate, which would have blocked him from taking high office again.
