Congratulations Facebook, you've invented the most insincere way to say 'happy birthday'

You may have thought the demise of the physical birthday card was cause for concern, trumped by texts, virtual cards and the thoroughly underwhelming posts on social media.

But now, Facebook has plunged the final nail into the coffin of sincerity by allowing people to wish someone a "happy birthday!" simply by typing "1" into their keypad.

Yes, that's right...

The message is achieved through the "Facebook Texts" functionality which, once activated, allows users to connect their mobile phone to their account in order to receive notifications, friend requests and, clearly, to wish their acquaintances an underwhelming birthday.

What a time to be alive.
