Good news: The ‘power laces’ Nike Air Mags from Back to the Future II are actually going to be released.
Bad news: The 2015 Nike Mag will be a limited edition release which will only be available via auction next year, meaning you probably won’t get your hands on a pair unless you’re wealthy or incredibly dedicated.
Speculation about a potential release rose when Nike tweeted to Michael J Fox, who plays Marty McFly, on the eve of Back to the Future Day.
Finally, Michael J Fox previewed the power laces system on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night in New York, after 26 years of hype and false hope.
The power laces don’t seem quite as snappy as the pair in Back to the Future II, sadly, but that probably won’t stop most fans from uncontrollable bidding.
The proceeds from the auctions will go to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, details of which will be on the Nike website and on Twitter in spring 2016.
Nike president and CEO Mark Parker said:
We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes.
