The real reason why people post about their relationship on Facebook

Struggling to wade through your Facebook newsfeed after Valentine's Day without throwing up in your mouth? Stop being so cynical - it turns out that love is probably genuine.

A new study of 188 students in relationships by researchers at the University of Houston and Pennsylvania State University has found that people who post more about their partners on social networks tend to be the most satisfied with them.

"Posting about one's relationship on Facebook may be positively related to the quality of the relationship because it symbolizes making a public commitment to the relationship," lead author Mai-Ly Steers writes in the study. "An individual is highlighting to themselves and to others that the relationship is an integral part of his or her self."
