The finale of Game of Thrones season seven has confirmed one of the epic's major fan theories.
The multi-award winning HBO series has had more than its fair share of twists and turns.
Among the other climaxes of the series, one flashback reveals it all.
Jon Snow's parentage.
In Winterfell, Bran flashbacked to the wedding of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark.
This makes Jon a true born Targaryen, and therefore the heir to the Iron Throne.
It also means his real name is 'Aegon', which has less sexual solidity to it.
The theory had been suggested in a previous episode, when Bran looked back in time to witness Lyanna giving up her secret child to brother Ned Stark, who raised Jon as his own.
Fans already knew that Ned was not Jon's father, thanks to the flashback during the season six finale. The latest revelation confirms his real father's identity and therefore his claim to the iron throne.
The news nevertheless excited legions of Game of Thrones fans.
