It looks like the Star Wars trailer narrator's identity has been revealed

The identity of whoever provides the sinister narration to the first official trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been the source of feverish speculation since yesterday.

It seems that 99.9 per cent of the internet believes the ominous narrator is none other than Benedict Cumberbatch, with the voice having a bit of a Smaug-lilt to it.

Cumberbatch tends to get linked with every major film or franchise out there, and the rebooted Star Wars trilogy, directed by JJ Abrams, was no different.

But the Sherlock star was not among the official cast announcement and while Abrams is no stranger to springing surprises in the build-up to a film’s release, the voiceover is in fact much more likely to have been provided by official cast member Andy Serkis.

Serkis’s role in the new films has not been confirmed, but according to HitFix, which claimed Serkis was definitely providing the narration, he will be “playing a pivotal role in the film, although he will not have a lot of screen time”.

What do you think? Let’s just watch the trailer one more time…
