It was not a churlish victory lap, it was a message from a grown-up.

On New Year's Eve, president-elect Donald Trump gave a shout out to his "enemies" and the people he had defeated.

It was a little strange.

President Obama, who is more shy when it comes to Twitter (he typically posts about 100 tweets per year), instead posted this heartfelt video on the White House Facebook page.

His message was a reflection on 2016 and his eight years in office.

The president cited progressive reform in marriage equality, the assassination of Osama bin Laden, turning the 2008 recession into a recovery, and returning tens of thousands of soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The president closed with this promise.

I will be there with you every step of the way to ensure that this country forever strives to live up to the incredible promise of our founding—that all of us are created equal, and all of us deserve every chance to live out our dreams.

And from the Obama family to yours—have a happy and blessed 2017.

Following this, president-elect Trump tweeted a message that was much blander than his previous shout out to haters.

We wonder what prompted him?
