Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei just tweeted that the "malignant cancerous tumour" the rest of the world calls Israel must be "eradicated".

And what do you do when someone threatens you with genocide over social media? Hit back with a sick burn in gif form, preferably from Mean Girls, obviously.

The Iranian Embassy response did not break this most sacred of internet codes - but did possibly disappointed foreign relations experts everywhere along the way.

This bizarre exchange, featuring a gif of Regina George - played by Rachel McAdams - asking "Why are you so obsessed with me?", follows US president Donald Trump choosing not to renew the nuclear agreement with Iran.

The internet has mixed feelings.

While some people are seemingly rolling around on the floor in hysterics, others are more concerned that international diplomacy is increasingly getting replaced by sassy tweets.

On one hand, everyone loves Mean Girls and Israel's response is hilarious.

On the other, though, is the threat of imminent war.

But everyone can at least agree that yes, this really is what the world has come to and we should have seen it coming.
