Kieron Graham was adopted when he was three months old. Twenty years later, an innocuous ancestry DNA kit led to him finding out that he has a brother, who lived a stone's throw away from his house the whole time.

Graham has always had an interest in his biological family, and his adoptive parents were very open about the circumstances of his adoption. All he knew was that he had a brother called Vincent, and his mother’s name was Shawn. With no surname, he had little to go on.

As an early Christmas present from his adoptive parents, Graham received a DNA kit, and a few weeks later the results showed that he was related to a 29-year-old Vincent Ghant, whose birthday matched the documents his adoptive parents had.

He quickly got in contact with Ghant through Facebook and discovered that they are indeed related.

In fact, it turns out they are brothers.

Speaking to Good Morning America, Graham recalls the message that confirmed to him they are family:

I was super surprised, I was amazed. I didn’t know what to think at first, I just had so many emotions running through my head. I was just super excited to finally get to see what he looked like, to talk to him on Facebook and everything.

Ghant, who has vague memories of a brother called ‘Tyler’, was equally shocked:

I was in disbelief. It was a very surreal moment. It took a while for it to set in and as the conversation progressed it finally hit me ‘this is really my brother’. It was amazing.

Ghant remembers Graham’s smile as a baby and remembers helping his mum - who was looking after them by herself and worked long shifts as a nurse.

If that wasn’t enough of a shock to the system, it turns out they were both studying at Kennesaw State University…and on the same political science course.

Graham has since found out that he also has a younger brother by the name of Christian – the same as his middle name - from his biological mum’s side, and a niece.

Graham also reached out to his biological father’s side of the family and discovered he has another brother.

Speaking to BuzzFeed News' Tanya Chen, Ghant admits that he had often asked after his brother, but the adoption weighed too heavily on his mum.

It just got to the point where I was, like, I’ll just wait for her when she’s ready.

Well, it looks like mum was ready – and met with both Graham and his adoptive parents, who have been very supportive of him.

Looks like they'll have to add a few more chairs to the table for Christmas!
