A man thought his dog had a tattoo and it led him to make the worst mistake of his life

Some of us would do anything for man's best friend - a dog is part of the family after all, and should be taken care of a loved no matter what.

Chris Mendiola took this level of affection one step further though, and allegedly mistook a neutering mark for a tattoo.

Mendiola, clearly an animal lover, was upset when he saw a mark on his dog Bear. He apparently thought it was a tattoo forcibly added by Bear's previous owner.

It sickens me to know that people actually tattoo their pets. So tonight I got this tattoo.

He shared photos of his new arm tattoo and the dog's markings.

Then came the penny drop.

A friend texted to explain that the mark on Bear means the dog in question had been neutered (which is a whole other form of animal subjugation).

The original Facebook post, and Mandiola's moment of realisation were shared on redditmuch to the amusment of other users.

By getting the same tattoo, it implied that Mandiola had also been neutered - you get the gist.

Redditors were quick to jump in and mock.

The tattoo system for neutering is used to stop vets from performing the internal parts of the operation more than once unnecessarily.

Other users were kinder, and thought he was being sweet.

Speaking to Mashable, Chris said he had done his research, and nobody has mentioned the neutering tattoo.

I don’t think that people should crop ears. I don’t think that people should cut tails off their pets. If they’re going to be a member of your family, you should treat them as such. I don’t see tattooing your dog as something that you should do... My vet would never just say, ‘Hey, willy-nilly, I’m going to tattoo your dog.’ It’s not going to happen.
