There’s an easy trick to falling asleep you should try out the next time you’re tossing and turning in bed desperately trying to doze off.

Researchers found writing a ‘to do’ list can help people fall asleep quicker.

Dr Michael Scullin and his team at Baylor University in Texas studied 57 adults aged 19-30 split into two groups.

Participants slept-over in a lab and were given writing tasks. One half wrote about things they had already completed while the other half wrote a list of tasks they needed to do.

Those in the ‘to do’ group fell asleep 16 minutesafter bedtime while those in the 'completed' group dozed off after an average of 25 minutes.

Writing in the journal Experimental Psychology - researchers said worrying about future tasks “is a significant contributor to difficulty in falling asleep." They added:

The more specifically participantswrote their to-do list, the faster they subsequently fell asleep, whereas the opposite trend was observed when participantswrote about completed activities.
