We don't deserve Meryl Streep, simple as that.

Not only is she one of the greatest living actress of our generation, but she also has an innate ability to deftly deconstruct the issues of the day and eloquently say what many of us are thinking.

Her latest analysis of modern civilisation? Her take on disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein and the dozens of women who have accused him of sexual harassment.

Speaking on a panel at the BuzzFeed News offices in New York, Streep pointed out that if more women had been in positions of power while Weinstein was in the industry, his alleged behaviour would never have been allowed to escalate.

She said:

If the boards of the company were half female, there wouldn't ever have been payoffs to anybody. None of this - the shenanigans wouldn't have occurred.

Streep - who was on the panel alongside Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks promoting of their Oscar hopeful movie The Post - said that around 17-20% of boards were made up of women, "from the Senate to the Supreme Court to probably [BuzzFeed News]", but stressed that the number needed to be much higher.

We have to break in and make it 50/50 at the decision making level, because everything filters down from there.

The Oscar-winner then set her sights on the Hollywood press and the mainstream media, saying: "Yes, the Hollywood press is often and has often been silly and shills for the powerful, but that's just like in the world".

What powerful people do immediately is try and control dissent, or to suppress it, or get rid of it. in other countries they cut people's heads off. Here, they just try to buy up as many local television studies as they possibly can.

She also pointed out that more often journalists in the mainstream media are under too much pressure to provide "three reputable sources for every story and take the time to put out a real story".

"Power tries to suppress truth, that's just what happens. In Hollywood, in Wall Street and in the news media as well. So everybody has to stay alert, and awake, and fight against it."

Speaking of more women in positions of power, did anyone say, "Streep 2020"?
