North Korea could hit New York with a 'hell of a missile' warns expert

An expert has claimed that North Korea could launch a "hell of a missile" at New York.

The rogue state launched a test missile in early July which flew several hundred miles making it the country's first ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile).

The guided ballistic missile, known as the Hwasong 14 is thought to have a minimum range of 5,500 kilometres and, although designed fo nuclear capability, could carry chemical or biological weapons.

Jeffrey Lewis, professor at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies and host of nuclear studies podcast Arms Control Wonk, told This American Lifeabout the possible range of the ordnance:

People keep saying Alaska – but that’s people making themselves feel better.

It demonstrated the range to go to Alaska but that doesn’t mean that is its maximum range. We’ve been modelling it and it looks a lot better than that.

It probably can hit New York. This last one [test launch] went seven times higher than the International Space Station.

It’s a hell of a missile.
