Haunting pictures show what the abandoned Rio Olympic Park looks like now

One year ago the eyes of the entire world were on Rio de Janeiro for the Olympic Games.

Stars including Usain Bolt, Mo Farah, Michael Phelps and Simone Biles wowed audiences with their incredible feats of athleticism and endurance.

Despite infrastructure and construction doubts before the games, Rio delivered a memorable and beautiful event. Team GB had a fantastic year as well, and managed to walk away with a record tally of sixty-seven medals.

There were hopes that the Olympics would leave a bright legacy in the Brazilian capital, but it seems they haven't come to fruition.

12 months later, most of the purpose built stadia has fallen into disrepair and neglect, partly due to the deep economic crisis that has plagued the city.

ESPNhave published a lengthy report on the aftermath of the games where they state that only 15 of the 27 venues have been used in any capacity since the conclusion of the event.

Venues such as the pool, velodrome and the Olympic Park now resemble ghost towns that no one visits.

Even Rio's new mayor, Marcelo Crivella, has abandoned plans to turn the handball arena into a public school, while the athletes village, with it's luxury apartments, is now abandoned.
