Today has been an extraordinary day in politics, with Boris Johnson announcing he will not stand for the leadership of the Conservative party.

The announcement came at a press conference where he was widely expected to announce a leadership campaign.

The former Mayor of London however, declared precisely the opposite following Michael Gove's shock announcement that he will be running for the leadership.

Political commentators have a rather difficult job, in these frantic post-Brexit times, of summarising exactly what has happened to the Westminster landscape.

We think that BBC News' assistant political editor Norman Smith did a pretty good job.
