One in eight women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime; this is the equivalent of one person every 10 minutes.

According to the NHS, symptoms range from the obvious - such as a new lump, or thickened tissue around the breast - to the innocuous, like developing a rash.

For Claire Warner, there was only one symptom: a tiny dimple on the underside of her left breast.

Her friend’s Facebook post about breast cancer had prompted a visit to the doctors, and a biopsy confirmed her fears – she had cancer.

Rather than let it get her down, Warner underwent surgery, as well as chemotherapy and Radiotherapy.

Warner posted a picture of her affected breast on Facebook:

This is a picture of my left boob. The small purplish bruise is where I had a biopsy taken. The minuscule dimple up and to the left of it is a rare and little-known symptom of BREAST CANCER.

Blink and you'd miss it.

I'm not ill. My only symptom is this dimple.

Warner’s photo received over 25,000 shares since she posted it last year, and it remains on Facebook.

Her post challenges the stereotype that breast cancer has obvious physiological symptoms, and even questions the assumption that cancer is always painful.

Although 90 per cent of breast lumps are not cancerous, it is important to visit your GP, whether you are a man or a woman, if one develops.

Other symptoms of breast cancer include:

  • A change in the size or shape of one or both of your breasts
  • A new dimple on the skin of your breasts
  • A lump or swelling in either of your armpits
  • A rash on or around the nipple
  • A change in the appearance of one or both your nipples
